Background and History of LAWSA

The student government of the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law came into being in the late 1970s. The official name of the student government is known as LAWSA. LAWSA activities became inactive as a result of the Liberian Civil war which started in the early 90s. Upon the cessation of hostilities in Liberia, academic activities resumed but LAWSA was dormant 2004 when students organized themselves to continue normal students’ activities. Following this period, LAWSA again went into dormancy until 2008 when a new constitution was adopted.

Today LAWSA is active and more accessible to students. A lot of activities have taken place over the last eight since LAWSA adopted its new constitution in 2008. Many students of the law school now appreciate the essence of having a student government that is proactive in engaging administration on behalf of students and at the same time promoting a conducive learning environment for students through programs and activities. Recently a distress moment was held with the aim of preparing students to engage the final exams with new innovation and boldness.

All students of the law school are members of LAWSA. Therefore, it the responsibility of each and every student of the law school to subscribe to and abide by the constitution of LAWSA in addition to the student handbook and honor code. The leadership of LAWSA is currently designing a holistic students’ activities policy which is expected to cover scholarship, sporting events, field trips and affiliation with other law schools abroad and in the West African sub-region.

LAWSA conducted elections a year ago and the current leadership of LAWSA was elected and inducted to steer the affairs of the student body. As a mark of achievement, this current leadership of LAWSA provided scholarship or financial aid for about sixty (60) students at a cost of approximately sixty thousand (US$60,000.00). Negotiations are currently ongoing to financially aid students again giving the harsh economic realities in the country.
