COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course examines the several phases of the employment relationship within the Liberian setting, the evolution of labor unions, union activity, labor law legislation, union recognition and collective bargaining relationship; unlawful combinations, picketing and strikes, the use of disputes settlement mechanism as alternatives to the strike and lockout weapons, problems of union democracy, illegal and wrongful dismissals, and rights of individual employees with respect to unions. It also deals with problems of individual employment contracts, problems relating to interpretation and enforcement of the Liberian Labor Law and Practices and collective bargaining agreement in such areas as wages, hours of work and other terms and conditions of employment. It also covers workmen’s compensation for death and industry injury, using the National Social Security law of Liberia as primary statutory authority.
